I currently have one drive that contains a System Reserved partition (which includes the boot files). The status is System, Active, Primary Partition. I have another drive with the C: partition. The status is Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition. Games even ran well. But I noticed that there was only 1 partition and no System Reserved, and it appeared that the boot files were located on the C drive. So my question is, on a regular 8 installation to an internal HDD, how can you delete System Reserved and move the boot files to the C drive? Is there any advantage in doing so (or.
Hello,I have just built a new system with 3 disk drives.Disk 0 - 1TB Samsung SATA 3 G/bsDisk 1 - 1TB Samsung SATA 3 G/bsDisk 2 - 64Gb Cruciel M4 SSD SATA 6 Gb/s set to AHCI in BIOS.My intention is to use the SSD for Windows 7, and this was sellected during the installation.On completion a 100 MByte partition 'System Reserved' had been created on Disk 0, the rest of the space being unallocated. Disk 1 was fully unallocated. Dsik 2 (the SSD) had Windows on it (Partition C:).I would prefer to have the System Resereved partition on the same drive as Windows (Drive 2), or preferably in the C: partition itself as I believe it can be.I tried another install with just the SSD drive connected, and the Sytem Resereved partition was created on the SSD and Windows would boot OK.However, when the other 2 HD's were reconnected there was an error on boot up and I had to user the Repair option on the installation CD to get the computer working again. When it booted up the System Reverved partition that was being used was back on Drive0, and the one on the SSD (Drive 2) now had a drive letter (F:) associated with it.How can I get Windows to install purely onto the SSD (Drive 2), including all of the boot files that would normally be in the System Reserved partition?Regards,Nick. Finally got this sorted after lots of attempts at installing Windows.From other posts and sites found out that in order to prevent Windows creating a Sytem Reserved partition all existing drives must appear to be fully used, so at the Language selection screen I used diskpart (Shift F10) to format the 3 disks.Then I installed Windows to the SSD. When the installation was complete and logged into Windows, the SSD contained Windows and there was no System Reserved partition to be found.However, disk 0 was listed as a system disk (all 1 TByte of it) with no drive letter. There was no way to partition it.A reboot with the two hard drives disconnected, and just the SSD remaining resulted in a failure to boot.
If the hard drives were reconnected the system would boot up.I then re-installed Windows to the SSD with the two hard drives disconnected. The computer would boot OK, but when the hard drives were reconnected it would fail with the message 'Reboot and select proper Boot device or insert Boot Media in selected Bootdevice and press a key'.Thats when I realised, with the help from what Eric above had noted what may be the problem.Inspecting BIOS revealed that the Boot Priority was Hard Drive, DVD and then Removable Media, which was correct.However, there was and additional setting below it not shown in the motherboard manual named Hard Drive.Inspecting this revealed that the hard drive order was:-1 Samsung HD 12. Samsung HD 23. Crucial M4 SSDThe order was altered to put the Cruciial M4 as the first device and the computer re-booted.All now OK. Boots up in seconds, and Disk Manager lists the two Samsung 1 TByte drives (disk's 0 & 1) as unallocated and Windows on C: partition (disk 2), with no System Reserved partition to be seen.All that now remains is to sort out the partitioning and get some programs put on.That may take a while as this is only my second build, and the last one was some 5 years ago.Thanks Eric. Hello,Generally what I do when installing Windows 7 to one partition is Press Shift + F10 at the disk selection screen when booted from the product DVD to open a command prompt.
I then use Diskpart to create a single partition on the disk I am installing to. Afterexiting the command prompt refresh the drives and select the disk with the newly created partition.
This will force Windows to be installed to the single partition.In your scenario you may need to first remove the other 2 drivers (other wise the system reserved partition will end up on one of them), or change the cabling to have the SSD as disk 0. If you do not change the disk order make sure that the biosboot order is set correctly.Hope that helps!Erik. Move System Reserved Partition To Another Driver
Howdy,I just installed Server 2012 r2 on a Dell R710 server and have set it up to host Hyper-V, and I have created a VM. That all went well.The problem is that when I was setting up the RAID I built the RAID1 Nearline SAS array first (it will be used to do backups), and the RAID10 SAS array (for the OS and VMs) second. This resulted in the virtual disks created by the RAID card being in the 'wrong' order. I installed the OS on Disk 1 (the SAS array), but the System Reserved partition was added to Disk 0.Is there any way to move the System Reserved partition to Disk 1?Is there a way to swap the disks so that the SAS array is Disk 0, and the NL-SAS is Disk 1?Do I just need to start over? But do able, as the server has not been deployed to production yet)Thanks for any assistance-Matt. About the raid 5 vs raid 6 vs raid 10 debate. Lets use 4 disks at 1tb each.2TB Raid 5 using 3 disks & a hot spare - ANY 1 drive can fail while hot spare is being rebuilt.
Then can sustain ANOTHER ANY drive failure and data is still intact2TB Raid 6 using 4 disks - 2 simultaneous ANY drive failures and data is still intact2TB Raid 10 using 4 disks - 1 drive can fail, but 50/50 chance if another drive fails could be permanent data loss.WTF would anyone use raid 10 for data storage? BECAUSE THEY DONT UNDERSTAND HOW TO USE RAID.Simply put, RAID 10 users are uneducated in the aspects of hardware controllers, don't understand striping or block size, don't know how to reassemble a raid 5 without wiping the array, how to bring failed volumes back online to recover data, or how to DD failed drives in an unknown state and reassemble disk images into a working software raid 5 for recovery purposes or read configuration info from the disks themselves. I understand that they have been burned by raid 5 or raid 6, but instead of rationalizing that 'raid 5 bad / raid 10 good', how about learning all about raid 5? It's easy, try creating a software raid 5 in a VM using four 1GB virtual disks, and play with how the virtual disks get used with striping and parity.The benefits of raid 5 or 6 FAR OUTWEIGH any benefit of depending on raid 10 fault tolerance. The issue I am worried about is:What happens if I need to make changes to the NL-SAS array in the future? Since the System Restore is on a different drive than the OS, it might get in the way of getting things done at a later stage.I can deal with either 1 or 0, but I would like to OS and System Restore on the same disk.Any suggestions to make the reload go more smoothly? Is it worth doing a backup & restore of the OS?I have never had a server die, so I've never actually tried to restore a bare-metal OS.
